Amazon To Start Paying E-Book Authors Based On Pages Read

SEATTLE (CBS Seattle)– Amazon says it will start paying some e-book authors based on the number of pages read by people.

The Independent reports books that are available through Kindle Unlimited and Kindle Owners’ Lending Library will qualify for the new payment system. Authors with literature in the two programs get a fund amount from Amazon split between all authors. The system now will base pay off how many pages of the book have been read, as opposed to how many actual books have been lent.

To exemplify the new system, Amazon said if there were two authors who had written books that were 100 pages and 200 pages long, the longer book would get twice the pay if both books were finished by the reader. However, if a reader only got through half of the 200-page book, both authors would be paid the same.

To ensure fairness, Amazon has figured out ways of making sure pages are equal by taking line breaks and text size into consideration. A new standard for self-published authors to track has been created, as well as ensuring readers begin on the first chapter of each book.
